Workshop “Representing the Common Ground”

Organisiert von Projekt A1

Wann: 04. Dezember 2026

Wo: Raum 215, Brechtbau, Wilhelmstraße 50, 72074 Tübingen

Workshopbeschreibung:

Researchers agree that a complete model of discourse must include some representation of the Common Ground, the material that interlocutors treat as mutual commitments, as part of a Lewisian Conversational Scoreboard. Researchers differ, however, in what that representation should look like; proposed components include: a bag of worlds, more structured collections of worlds, the Question Under Discussion stack, the Table, the To-Do List, the Conversational Record, and private, public and projected commitments, among others. This workshop will bring together researchers from linguistics, philosophy of language, and cognitive science to share their research which bears on how the Common Ground is represented, and to discuss how these varied approaches can be synthesized or otherwise inform one another.

Invited Speakers:

Corien Bary (Radboud University), Robert Hawkins (Stanford University), Craige Roberts (Ohio State University), Judith Tonhauser (Universität Stuttgart)
