Born in Hong Kong, Dr Hung has held international visiting appointments with the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Academia Sinica (Taipei). He conceptualises Chinese societies, cultures, and Chinese-language worlds within broader global and transregional dimensions. His monograph Redefining Heresy and Tolerance (HKU Press, 2024) closely examines the transformation of ethnic and religious boundaries in both historical and contemporary China. His forthcoming work with Amsterdam University Press (2026) examines the Overseas Chinese Affairs Council and Cold War Chinese diaspora politics, while another of his projects brings a unique focus to Chinese Muslims alongside Chinese-descended communities in Batavia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Dr Hung is significantly extending the study of Global China into Japan and Europe, engaging in collaborative studies that feature interdisciplinary approaches to explore the societal, cultural, and everyday life dimensions of the global Chinese.
His current scholarship is defined by a historical-anthropological methodology that combines traditional archival research with rigorous fieldwork, including intensive observation and oral history. It emphasises a nuanced non-state perspective and uncovers the lived experiences and everyday realities of global Chinese communities.
