PhD Position - Genome Mining of Streptomyces collinus

Interfakultäres Institut für Mikrobiologie und Infektionsmedizin

The research group Microbiology/Biotechnology (Prof. Wohlleben/Dr. Weber) at the Interfaculty Institute of Microbiology and Infection Medicine Tübingen is looking for a PhD student.

Our groups are working on the interface of bioinformatics and functional genomics of secondary metabolite production. Currently, we have a PhD position available, starting as soon as possible:

Genome Mining of Streptomyces collinus

(TV-L E13 - 50%)

The genome of the kirromycin producer S. collinus is sequenced. Although kirromycin is the only metabolite known from this strain, genome scanning revealed the presence of many other secondary metabolite gene clusters.

In this European funded PhD work the successful candidate will carry out a systematic analysis of the S. collinus genome for secondary metabolites using software developed in our group.[1]

Interesting clusters will then be cloned and heterologously expressed and the biosynthetic products will be analyzed. Alternatively, he/she will engineer regulatory pathways to activate these clusters in S. collinus.

Requirements: Diploma/masters degree in biology, biochemistry or related fields. Applicants should have experience in molecular techniques and good bioinformatics skills for sequence analysis.

They should be motivated, have good communication skills and capable of working in an interdisciplinary team environment.
