Internationaler Workshop der Anthropologie und Bodenkunde an der Ohio State University

Ein internationaler interdisziplinärer Workshop in Anthropologie, Archäologie und Bodenkunde zum Thema "Soil and Human Culture Dynamics during the Holocene Epoch" fand Ende Juni an der Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus im US-Bundesstaat Ohio statt. Der Workshop wurde initiiert vom Sonderforschungsbereich 1070 RessourcenKulturen, der Abteilung Austauschprogramme der Universität Tübingen (UT) und der University of Maryland (UMD), die Leitung lag bei Dr. Sean Downey (OSU), Dr. Peter Kühn (UT) und Prof. Dr. Bruce James (UMD). Es war das dritte Treffen deutscher und amerikanischer Wissenschaftler zum Thema RessourcenKulturen, nach den Treffen in Tübingen 2016 und Maryland 2017. Die Kooperation wird finanziert über das Zukunftskonzept der Universität Tübingen im Rahmen der Exzellenzinitiative des Bundes und der Länder sowie von der University of Maryland, der Ohio State University und dem OSU Sustainable and Resiliency Economies Discovery Theme.

Die Themen des diesjährigen Treffens waren "Managing World Soils for Food, Clima and Peace" und "Favor - Disfavor? Developement of resources in marginal areas". Der Workshop beinhaltete dabei einen intensiven zweitägigen Schreibworkshop, eine Exkursion zu lokalen archäologischen Stätten und eine Networking-Veranstaltung mit Forschungsvorträgen, Blitzvorträgen von Dozentinnen und Dozenten sowie Studierenden der beteiligten Institutionen. Es gab einen Tagesausflug in den Hopewell Cultural National Park, wo die Archäologen des National Park Service die markanten Grabhügel näher erläuterten.

Der Workshop endete mit einer eintägigen Diskussion über zukünftige Forschungskooperationen und Doktorandenschulungen.

International Workshop in Anthropology and Soil Science at Ohio State University

From June 22 to 27 2018, an international interdisciplinary workshop in anthropology, archaeology and soil science has taken place at Ohio State University(OSU), Columbus, Ohio, USA, on the topic "Soil and Human Culture Dynamics during the Holocene Epoch". This collaboration was initiated within the framework of the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1070 ResourceCultures and the section exchange programmes of University of Tübingen (UT) and the University of Maryland (UMD). It was led by Dr. Sean Downey (OSU), Dr. Peter Kühn (UT) and Prof. Dr. Bruce James (UMD). After Tübingen (2016) and Maryland (2017), this is the third meeting of German and American scientists on the topic of resource cultures. The cooperation is financed by the Institutional Strategy of University of Tübingen as part of the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments, by University of Maryland, Ohio State University and the OSU Sustainable and Resilient Economies Discovery Theme.

The topics of this year's meeting are 'Managing World Soils for Food, Climate and Peace' and 'Favor - Disfavor? Development of Resources in Marginal Areas'. The workshop included an intensive two-day writing workshop, a fieldtrip to local archaeological sites, and a networking event including research talks lightning presentations by OSU, UT, and UMD faculty and students. There was a day-long outing to Hopewell Cultural National Park where National Park Service Chief Archaeologist staff provided explanation and interpretation of the sites ancient burial mounds. The workshop ended with a day-long discussion of future collaborative research and graduate student training activities.
