Biography

Dr. Frank Muyard is a Sociologist and Sinologist, currently Associate Professor, National Central University, Taiwan, and Head of the Ecole Française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO, French School of Asian Studies)'s Taipei Center. 
He was Director of the French Center for Research on Contemporary China (CEFC) Taipei Office from 2004 to 2009, Visiting Scholar at the Center for Asian Studies, University of Colorado Boulder (2010-2012), and 2013 Taiwan Fellowship Scholar at the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (RCHSS), Academia Sinica. He received his PhD in Sociology at the University of Montreal in Canada, after being trained in Modern Chinese History and Sinology (BA), and in International Relations and Political Economy (MA) at the French National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO) in Paris. He has spent over two decades living and working in Taiwan and China and speaks fluent Chinese.
He is an Editorial Board Member of China Perspectives, and member of the European Association of Taiwan Studies (EATS), the Association of Asian Studies (AAS), the Archaeological Society of Taiwan (AST), and the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association (IPPA).
Dr. Muyard’s research covers the fields of historical and political sociology in Taiwan and China, and of Austronesian prehistory and archaeology. He focuses on the issues of national and cultural identity, comparative nationalism and the question of modernity, state, and nation in East Asian and Western societies. He is currently researching the history of Taiwanese archaeology and its interactions with nationalism and indigenous peoples. 

Current Research Project

Dr. Muyard's current research projects center 1) on the links between democratization and nationalism in Taiwan, 2) on the interactions between nationalism and archaeology in the discourses on Austronesian prehistory in Taiwan and China. He is currently editing two volumes on Taiwan and South China Sea prehistory and archaeology to be published by EFEO Press, Taiwan Maritime Landscapes from Neolithic to Early Modern Times (with Paola Calanca and Liu Yi-chang), and Maritime Exchange and Localization across the South China Sea, 500 BC- 500 AD (with Liu Yi-chang).
