The Chair for Applied Bioinformatics (Prof. Oliver Kohlbacher), Center for Bioinformatics at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, one of eleven German universities distinguished as excellent under the German government’s initiative, is currently looking for a

PhD Student in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology (TV-L E13, 75%)

starting in early 2018.

We are seeking a PhD student for a new Europe-wide innovative training network (ITN), a graduate school, funded by the Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action ITN 2017 of the European Commission (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017). This graduate school, Analytics for Biologics (A4B), offers a specific training program for research on therapeutic protein species. The research program that will run within this graduate school aims to develop methods for effective purification and analysis of therapeutic proteins, including bioinformatics methods for the interpretation of the resulting data. The graduate school will include 15 PhD students from different areas within the program and one of these will be employed at University of Tübingen.

The student will focus on the development of new algorithmic techniques to identify and quantify protein species. Recent advances in top-down mass spectrometry enable new options for the characterization of protein species. We will develop novel algorithms integrating top-down data with bottom-up data and thus permit a more comprehensive view on protein species. Integrating the data in a probabilistic framework will support in depth characterization of post-translational modifications. Inspired by algorithmic ideas from label-free quantification, this data will also be used to obtain accurate estimates of relative concentrations of protein species.

All PhD students within this graduate school will receive a background education in production, analysis and economic exploitation of therapeutic proteins, as well as training in relevant soft skills. This training will be provided during dedicated Training Schools, soft skills training sessions and a number of workshops to be hosted at the different partner institutions.

Qualifications

A mobility rule applies, notably applicants must not have spent more than 12 months in the country of the host institution within the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment.

The candidate should be highly motivated for doing scientific research and should have well developed analytical and problem-solving skills. Equally important is great communication skills as the center is a strong collaboration between three different universities and eight biotech companies.

To apply, applicants must:

· have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in bioinformatics or a related subject with outstanding performance

· be in the first four years of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree

· have excellent English communication skills

· excellent programming skills in C++ and/or previous experience with mass spectrometric data are a plus.

Disabled candidates will be given preference over other equally qualified applicants. The University of Tübingen seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and therefore urges qualified women to apply. Formal employment procedures will be carried out by the University’s Central Administration.

Please send your application (including motivation letter, curriculum vitae, transcripts and certificates, and two academic references) via e-mail as a single PDF to Ms. Claudia Walter (abi-sekr@informatik.uni-tuebingen.de).
