Expert in tropical diseases becomes University of Tübingen Ambassador

Prof. Monique Scheer, Vice-President for International Affairs of University of Tübingen, and Dr. Selidji Todagbe Agnandji, the new University of Tübingen Ambassador

The research alumnus and medical doctor Selidji Todagbe Agnandji, director of the Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné CERMEL in Gabon, has been appointed University of Tübingen Ambassador to Central- and West Africa. The ambassador appointment recognizes his commitment to the cooperation between the Institute for Tropical Medicine at the University Hospital of Tübingen and CERMEL, which has a more than 25-year history.

The long-standing joint activities of the Tübingen Institute for Tropical Medicine and CERMEL have focused on the research of poverty related and neglected diseases. The collaboration is now to be extended to networking with alumni of various disciplines in Africa and aims to address global challenges of health and wellbeing. Dr. Agnandji is known particularly for his research on malaria and Ebola which he combines with social outreach activities centered on the sub-Saharan population. His Tübingen host Dr. Dr. Carsten Köhler, director of the Center of Excellence for Tropical Medicine in Baden-Württemberg and current president of the German society of tropical medicine and international health (DTG), considers: “With him as ambassador, we gain an advocate for Tübingen who wants to expand and foster cooperation between Tübingen and Africa and between African partners themselves. This gives us a higher sense of connectiveness for our problem-solving, for instance in cases of fighting malaria in marginal populations, because it is necessary to continue to bring different disciplines together as problem-solving actors. The research ambassador Dr. Agnandji has a great network for this.”

The University Ambassador title is awarded to research alumni and alumnae of the University of Tübingen whose connections to their alma mater are of outstanding quality and eminence. The ambassador network is part of Tübingen’s international research alumni relations within the framework of the University’s internationalization strategy.
