ONLINE! China-Africa Relations since COVID-19

Panel discussion with Frank Sieren, 23. November 2021, 18:00-19:30h (CET), online!

China continues to be Africa’s largest trade partner. The trade between China and Africa nearly doubled between 2020 and 2021. While medical and economic aid to African countries from Europe was rather slow, countries from this region turned to China for help. China’s Sinovac now produces vaccines in partnership with companies in several African countries. New problems and contradictions arise with the efforts to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions and the inequality of development between the Global North and Global South, which became more visible during the recent G20 summit and the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26). Furthermore, Africa and China become more and more connected through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and, in the case of South Africa, the BRICS association. With the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Dakar (Senegal) coming up by the end of November, four experts on China-Africa relations are going to analyze and debate current issues from different perspectives in this panel.
