The Eberhard Karls University is a public university situated in the city, Tubingen. It was founded in 1477 and thus one of Germany´s oldest universities. Famous scientist and nobel prize winners have studied at this institution, one of which are Alois Alzheimer, a medical researcher who wrote his doctoral thesis here at Tubingen. He first identified a form of dementia currently known as Alzheimer´s Disease. Furthermore, in 2012 the university has been designated as an institute of excellence under the German federal and state governments´ excellence initiative.
More than 280 courses are offered in 130 subjects:
- Innovative study programs - e.g. Medical technology, Molecular Medicine, Environmental Science, geoecology, nanoscience, media Computer Science, Sports Management, Islamic Theology.
- International courses - e.g. neuro - and Behavioral Science, applied Environmental - and Geoscience, computer Linguistics, International Economics and Business Administration.
- Mobility - More than 800 Tübingen students participate in exchange programs with 520 universities and colleges in 62 countries sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The university also encourages international collaborations, offering two methods to study at the institution: an international exchange or a degree seeking program. In order to participate in an exchange program, you have to be nominated by your home university. Exchanges in all subjects areas are available and more than 800 international students from all over the world participate in special exchange programs offered by this institution. North America (USA/Canada), Asia (China, Japan, Korea), South Africa and Latin America (Brazil, Mexico) are the university´s main focus for international exchanges. Scholarships are available, South African Students in particular are offered scholarships of € 750/month. To pursue a degree at this institution a student must be able to speak and read german at a level C1. If your home institution is primarily English, this requirement may not be applicable to you. The office for German as a foreign language and intercultural programs does offer international students courses in German Language and culture. Furthermore, an Abitur equivalent level of education is needed to be an eligible candidate to study here. Unfortunately, the state of Baden Württemberg has implemented a tuition fee for international students of € 1,500/semester starting in the second semester of 2017. Nevertherless, to study in Germany and at the Eberhard Karls University is still an excellent opportunity.
