MY DAIMLER EXPERIENCE

by Nokuthaba Moyo

My experience can only be summed up into one sentence. I felt like a little girl in a candy store.
The first week we arrived and I read our program and it stated that we will be visiting Daimler, iI was so excited to finally see a glimpse of my future brightly beaming right in front of me. As a child I always aspired to be a mechanical engineer. The thought of a challenge fascinated me. When I finally decided to take upon mechanical engineering, I then aspired to work for Mercedes Benz.

The Mercedes standard was just so spectacular that I wondered how this much precision, class and quality while having quantity too can be achieved. But my trip to Daimler put all of these things into perspective and it taught me a lot. The trip opened up my eyes to realizing that a car is not just an engine and exhaust pipes but so much more goes into a quality car.

For the first part of the tour at the production plant as we walked through, the sight of the gigantic robots moving as people. Each move made with precision and it is timely, every hole punched and drilled into place. It was a fascinating sight. The choice of steel used and metals used for the body is the best that could be to give protection within the car but also making the car light and classier and truly according to the Daimler standards.
Secondly we got the chance to see the coats of paint that goes into painting the different car parts. We were also showed the interior parts of the car, every single detail that goes into making the car. The model car was a cross section of a real car. The seats were comfortable and the entire scenery was breathtaking and spectacular. Additionally we witnessed the smaller details being put into the car. It was amazing to see how everything was intertwined and how every small thing made a part and fit in well into the bigger picture. This part of the production is very important, and to me personally it taught me life values that as a student and an individual my smaller pieces that I experience every single day they form the bigger part of my picture.

Finally we got to witness the final cars. The different brands from s-class to the e-class and also the fancy bullet proof ones. It was a beautiful experience one that I will always be grateful for and one that I will always remember and an experience that gives me purpose in pursuing my career. I was mind blown.
