Spreading excellence and widening participation

Description

Research and innovation potentials in Europe sometimes display significant regional imbalances. The present cross-cutting program seeks to contribute to the extension of the European excellence base, and to increase participation in EU research and innovation activities through various cooperation and networking activities.

Target countries with underutilized research and innovation potential are:

  • Member states: Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Cyprus.
  • Associated States (to be considered in the call for tenders): Albania, Armenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Faroe Islands, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine.

They are eligible to apply in cooperation with research and innovation partner countries (Germany and other member and associated states).

Program lines:

  • Teaming: Creating new or expanding existing centers of excellence between excellent research institutions, each team consisting of one strong and one weaker region. The team building process is intended to facilitate or facilitate the weaker partner's ability to build and expand their institution and participate in excellence-based initiatives.
  • Twinning: A set of measures to strengthen a research area of a targeted region by partnering with at least two powerful facilities in the same area. These include e.g. the exchange of personnel, expert visits, training, workshops, conference participation, summer schools, information and public relations etc.
  • ERA-Chairs: Creation of attractive framework conditions as an incentive for the sustainable positioning of excellent scientists in facilities of a target region. This should increase competitiveness for cutting-edge research and innovation.

Funding schemes:

  • Coordination and Support Action (CSA)

Further measures:

  • Marie Skłodowska Curie Widening Fellowships
