Programs for children and young people

Tübingen Children’s University

For over 20 years, the Children’s University has inspired young minds aged 7 to 12. In child-friendly language, researchers answer questions like  “why does our heart beat,” “why don’t the stars fall from the sky,” or “why a shepherd dog isn’t a dachshund.” Regular participants receive a “Children’s University Diploma,” and lecturers are met with enthusiastic applause. At the accompanying Children’s University Research Day, children can explore the University’s labs themselves. The program opens doors to deeper knowledge and sparks curiosity about the world.

AI Makerspace

The AI Makerspace is an experimentation hub for children, teenagers, and young adults. Curious minds can experiment, tinker, and get creative. In addition to open lab times and hands-on activities, we offer practical workshops on programming and artificial intelligence. The Makerspace also serves as a forum for exchange, ideas, and discussion – including for school classes and groups. At its core, it always connects the analog and digital worlds.

Federal Artificial Intelligence Competition (BWKI)

In the BWKI, students from across Germany develop their own AI projects to benefit people and the environment. Ten finalist teams then present their ideas in Tübingen. A panel of experts selects the winning team, which receives €1,500 and a technology internship. Admiration has been expressed by no less than German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for the creative projects emerging from this competition.

Children’s University “in the Countryside”

Tübingen too far away? We bring the Children’s University to you! In small towns and communities without a university, researchers introduce children aged 7 to 12 to exciting research topics in an accessible way. Lectures and experiments let children engage with academic questions beyond the campus.

Hector Kinderakademien

This statewide program sponsored by the Hector Foundation supports exceptionally talented primary school children beyond the regular curriculum. In specially designed STEM courses, children deepen their knowledge, develop new skills, nurture creativity, and engage with intellectual and social challenges. The goal is to uncover potential and foster independent, inquiry-based learning.
