The Graduate Academy of the University of Tübingen is dedicated to promoting junior researchers. It is the umbrella organization for the graduate academies of the faculties, through which it also integrates the university’s doctoral training programs and doctoral training networks.

Doctoral candidates

Qualification program for doctoral candidates

Doctoral candidates are admitted to the Graduate Academy by applying for (and gaining) acceptance as a doctoral candidate by their faculty. In this way, the faculty confirms their eligibility as a doctoral candidate. For more information, please consult the doctoral degree regulations of your faculty or visit the ILIAS Gateway.

Consulting for doctoral candidates

We provide information on all topics concerning the doctorate and a career in academia for doctoral candidates and Master students interested in doing a doctorate. Postdoctoral researchers aspiring to tenured professorship

Qualification program for postdoctoral researchers

As a rule, postdoctoral scholars verify that they are member of the university by presenting an employment contract. Postdoctoral researchers from partner institutions contact us directly.

Consulting for postdocs and juniorprofessors

We advise postdocs and junior professors on questions concerning career perspectives and management tasks. We will gladly take time for you. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Christian Zettl by E-mail to arrange a telephone or video call appointment.

Tasks and Goals

The Graduate Academy works to improve the quality of support and training for junior researchers through

  1. information and transparency
  2. qualification of doctoral researchers for an academic career as well as for professions outside the university
  3. promotion of interdisciplinary networking among doctoral candidates
  4. quality assurance

A further goal is to make the university more attractive for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from Germany and abroad.

The Graduate Academy actively promotes equal opportunities for women and men in fulfilling all of its tasks and regards this goal as an overall guiding principle of its work.

The Graduate Academy advises faculties/departments, institutions/projects funded by the excellence strategy and doctoral programs on the promotion of early career researchers, on good supervision and on different career paths

Extension options due to the Corona pandemic

For fixed-term scientific contracts and fellowships as well as temporary civil servant positions

What extension options are available for fixed-term scientific contracts, temporary civil service contracts and fellowships in the context of the Corona pandemic? Who should I contact for this? We have prepared a brief summary for you here:

Scientific employees According to § 2 para. 1 of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG) (German Act on Temporary Scientific Contracts)

Due to the current situation, the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG) has been supplemented by the following two temporary regulations: 

The maximum fixed-term limit for scientific personnel in the qualification phase who had a fixed-term employment relationship pursuant to Section 2 (1) WissZeitVG (qualification) at a time between March 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020 is extended by 12 months due to the pandemic-related restrictions on university and scientific operations. 

The maximum fixed-term limit for scientific personnel in the qualification phase who newly enter/entered an employment relationship limited in time according to § 2 para. 1 WissZeitVG (Qualification) between October 01, 2020 and March 31, 2021 is extended by 6 months. 

Attention: A claim for extension of the existing employment contract or an automatic extension is not connected with this regulation.  This requires a request from the responsible supervisor(s). Scientific employees according to § 2 para. 2 (third-party funded fixed-term contracts)

For third-party funded employees, third-party funders have taken different measures to respond to pandemic-related delays and changes in project progress. For projects funded by the German federal government, the EU and, under certain conditions, the DFG, delays in project implementation can be accommodated by extending the duration of the project. In some cases, additional funds can also be requested for position extensions or approved funds can be used in a more flexible manner. For more information on the individual measures, see here.


Temporary civil service contracts for scientific qualification

Temporary civil service contracts of all junior professors, junior lecturers and temporary academic advisors who have been in a civil service relationship from 01.03. to 30.09.2020 can be extended by up to six months on application. Scholarship holders

Extension upon application by the scholarship holder to the respective funding organization.
