Guided Tour of the Great Wine Barrel at Hohentübingen Castle

Discover a fascinating piece of Tübingen’s history with a guided English tour of the Great Wine Barrel in the cellar of Hohentübingen Castle.

Built from 1546 onwards, this extraordinary barrel is considered the world’s oldest surviving giant wine barrel and is associated with a Guinness World Record. With an impressive capacity of approximately 85,000 litres, it was known in historical sources and local tradition as the “Great Book”.
Its remarkable size made it famous far beyond Tübingen. For centuries, travel accounts, chronicles and historical views of the city highlighted the barrel as a must-see attraction and a striking symbol of Tübingen’s prosperity and prestige.

The guided tour offers a unique opportunity to explore this remarkable historical monument and learn more about its fascinating past. The visit will also include the Ice Age figurines, providing an additional glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage.

We look forward to sharing this special experience with you!
