Studying away from your home country is a special challenge. We want to help you meet the challenge. You can ask us for answers to your questions - from the time of your application until you have completed your degree. Ask us! We are happy to help.

The first point of contact for international prospective students, applicants and current students are the staff members of the Section “Advising and Admission of International Students”. We offer academic advice about application and studies.

The advisors in the individual subjects (“Studienfachberatung”) answer all questions concerning your academic field. Possible topics can be:

  • requirements of admission
  • course contents
  • study regulations
  • recognition of subject-relevant coursework
  • credits accumulated at another university

Beginning of term

Starting out can be difficult. In the first few weeks, you will experience many new things. We aim to help you find your way around the University.

First semester brochure

Our brochure “Welcome to the University of Tübingen (2020/21)” offers a first overview of the university and the city of Tübingen.


The Info-Point in the Mensa Wilhelmstraße helps students find their way to specific buildings, persons or counseling offices. It also gives general advice and hands out a number of forms.

E-mail, internet, login credentials

The IT Center (ZDV) is the first point of contact for questions and problems concerning the IT at ​​the University of Tübingen. The ZDV takes care of your e-mail address, log-in credentials, WiFi access and the PC pools, among other things. The staff members of the ZDV also offer introductory courses on the Campus portal and the online course catalog.

German language courses

You would like to continue improving your German language skills as a student in Tübingen? The staff members of the Section “German as a Foreign Language and Intercultural Programmes” are there to advice you on the language courses offered on different levels. The section also offers intercultural courses and trainings.

Doctoral students

The Welcome Center of the University of Tübingen helps international doctoral students with all practical and non-academic issues before and during their stay in Tübingen.

Student initiatives

Along with the University’s advisory and counseling services, there are a number of student initiatives providing support and events for international students.

Faculty Student Council

The Faculty Student Council is the student representations at the faculty or subject level. They often offer advising services and organize helpful information events for first-year students.

Student Initiative International Tübingen (StudIT)

The Studierendeninitiative Internationales Tübingen helps international students with organizational matters, fosters contacts between international and German students and offers leisure time activities in and around Tübingen.

Student Council

Several student representation groups form the University’s Student Council. It gives support and assistance from students for students.

International Coffee Hour

The International Coffee Hour is a meeting spot for International and German students. Everybody is welcome! The get-together takes place during semesters on Friday afternoon, 2-4 p.m. Coffee, tea and cookies for free! Meeting place: Clubhaus, Wilhelmstr. 30, upstairs.

Successful study

Learning Assistance (“Lernberatung”)

The Learning Assistance (“Lernberatung”) of the Student Counseling Service offers training in learning and studying efficiently and provides guidance concerning scheduling, monitoring, and exam preparation.

Academic Writing

You need advice on how to write academic texts in German or want to have your German text checked? The “Deutsch im Studium” program of the Section “German as a Foreign Language and Intercultural Programmes” offers individual counseling and courses.

The Diversity-oriented Writing Center helps with all questions concerning academic writing and aims to develop individual writing abilities. The pages of the Writing Center also list the offers for advice on academic writing (term papers, diploma thesis etc.) in the faculties and departments.

Organizing your studies / administrative matters

The page “Administrative matters” offers many helpful information.

Examination matters

The staff members of the central examinations office of the University of Tübingen are your contact persons for examination matters like deadlines and formal requirements for registering for exams.

Scientific information research

The University Library (UB) offers courses on scientific information research and management, amongst other services.

Learning languages (other than German)

The Language Learning Center offers language courses in eight languages (Catalan, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Swedish and Spanish) at beginner through to advanced levels for students of all faculties as well as other target groups.

Social counseling

Whether you have a child, are suffering psychological problems, or have a disability - when you are studying under such special circumstances, there is special support.

Psychotherapeutic counseling

The Psychotherapeutic Counseling Center (PBS) of the Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim offers help in a crisis, i.e. concentration deficits, exam anxiety, conflicts at the university, depression etc.

Legal advice

The Student Services (“Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim”) offer initial advice on legal uncertainties free of charge to students at the University of Tübingen. Possible topics are landlord/tenant issues or questions regarding employment/labor law.

Students with child and family

Das Familienbüro der Universität Tübingen berät und vermittelt bei Themen der Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Studium an der Universität.

Disabled and chronically ill students

Die Beratungsstelle für behinderte und chronisch kranke Studierende unterstützt Sie dabei, Ihr Studium erfolgreich zu durchlaufen. Sie können das Angebot in jeder Phase des Studiums wahrnehmen, also auch schon vor Beginn des Studiums.

Gender equality

Das Gleichstellungsbüro der Universität Tübingen steht für Auskünfte und Beratung zum Themenfeld „Gleichstellung von Frauen und Männern in Studium und Wissenschaft“ zur Verfügung.

A BaföG scholarship/student loan can often be granted to people with refugee status.

Legal information concerning your refugee status and the requirements for becoming a student can be found on the homepage of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). The page “Information for Refugees” at the “Study in Germany” portal gives helpful information about studying and living in Germany.
