CIVIS Master on climate, environment and energy comes to Tübingen

New study tracks: Climate Change Science and Environmental Chemistry & Toxicology

Starting in Winter Semester 2026/27, the University of Tübingen will offer together with partners of the CIVIS-Alliance the new international Master's programme Transdisciplinary Studies of Climate, Environment and Energy (TRACEE) with the two profile lines Climate Change Science and Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology. Developed within the CIVIS European University Alliance and coordinated by Stockholm University, TRACEE prepares students to become the next generation of change-makers capable of addressing the world's most pressing challenges: climate change, energy transitions, and environmental crises.  

TRACEE therefore follows a transdisciplinary approach, bringing together perspectives from the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and law. Students learn to work across disciplinary and institutional boundaries, collaboratively developing innovative and transformative solutions to complex global challenges.  

TRACEE offers nine study tracks taught at different CIVIS universities.

Through challenge-based learning, international mobility, and collaborative project work, students gain the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to create real-world impact and contribute to a more sustainable future. TRACEE itself is the result of a collaborative design process involving eleven CIVIS partner universities. The programme offers nine different study tracks to choose from. While six of the nine TRACEE study tracks started in 2025, three additional tracks will open in 2026, including the two new tracks  by the University of Tübingen and its partner universities.

Together with its TRACEE partner universities, the University of Tübingen offers two specialization tracks:

  • Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology (Joint Degree) 
    in cooperation with Stockholm University (Sweden) and the University of Bucharest (Romania). The track focuses on environmental processes, toxicology, chemical safety, environmental risk assessment, and regulatory frameworks for environmental protection.  
  • Climate Change Science (Joint Degree) 
    in cooperation with Stockholm University (Sweden) and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece). Students develop a comprehensive understanding of climate systems, climate variability and change, sustainability, renewable energy, ecosystem responses, and climate policy.  

At the University of Tübingen, TRACEE is driven by a co-creative programme development. Prof. Dr. Christiane Zarfl (Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology) and Prof. Dr. Reinhard Drews (Climate Change Science) form the Geoscience Department created these transformative programme and their study tracks together with Martina Lorenz (Planning and Development of Degree Programs) as well as with colleagues and partners across the CIVIS alliance, to shape an innovative, student-centred learning experience. This collaborative approach reflects the programme's core philosophy: bringing together diverse perspectives, expertise, and stakeholders to address complex climate, environment, and energy challenges through transdisciplinary cooperation.
