Language certificate Africa

Applications for South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Uganda, Rwanda:

All applicants for an English-speaking university (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Uganda, Rwanda) must take one of the standardized language tests described below.

TOEFL

The TOEFL is offered by the  Educational Testing Service ETS. Here you can find all information on registration and free sample questions.

The cost for the Internet-Based TOEFL (iBT) is currently 265 USD.

Attention: TOEFL iBT Home Edition is not accepted!

We recommend sending your test result directly to the International Office using the Institutional Code B519.

The test is generally manageable for anyone with not completely rusty English skills. Of course, you should familiarize yourself with the test format and carefully review the examples provided in the information brochure and online (e.g., for a fee at http://toeflpractice.ets.org/); preparatory books are also available.

Institutional TOEFL

We have agreed with our African colleagues that it is not strictly necessary to submit the Internet-Based TOEFL as proof of sufficient English skills. Alternatively, the so-called “Institutional TOEFL” can be taken, which is conducted by the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut (d.a.i.) Tübingen. Preparation courses are also offered regularly. Current dates and detailed information can be found at: Sprachtests | d.a.i. Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut Tübingen.

The required minimum score for placement is 79 points (iBT) or 550 points (Institutional TOEFL).

The fees for the Institutional TOEFL at d.a.i. are currently €94 (for d.a.i. members and University of Tübingen students: €84).

IELTS

As an alternative, we also accept IELTS as proof of English proficiency (minimum requirement: 6.5). Further information and registration: https://www.ielts.org/.

The current test fee is €276, payable by credit card. Individual test dates are assigned.

The language test result must be submitted together with all other application documents by the application deadline; late submissions cannot be accepted.

Applications for Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, Tunisia:

For French- or Portuguese-speaking universities (Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, Tunisia), a suitable certificate of sufficient language skills in the respective language – preferably at B2 level – is required.
