Federal Funding Programs

At federal level, the Federal Ministries – primarily the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) – support research in specific fields. The DAAD funds research in an international context, while the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities supports long-term projects in the humanities and social sciences.

Federal Ministries (including BMFTR)

Application

Applications to Federal Ministries are generally submitted in a two-stage process via the easy-online portal. Please note that, formally, the university – and not the principal investigator – is the applicant. You will therefore need the signature or approval of an authorised representative of the university by the time you submit the full application at the latest. Please contact the Research Support as early as possible.

The Academies' Programme

Funding objective

The Academies’ Programme supports long-term basic research in the humanities to explore cultural heritage, to make it accessible and highlight its relevance in the present and to preserve it for the future. The application process is coordinated by the regional academies (for Tübingen, The Heidelberg Academy of Sciences), while the overall program is coordinated by the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities (UA).

All researchers in Germany holding tenured positions are eligible to apply.

Funding volume

Funding is provided over a period of 12 to 25 years, with an annual budget ranging from €120,000 to approximately €500,000.

Application

The application process has multiple stages. Once a year (usually by January 31), draft proposals can be submitted to the Heidelberg Academy.

In addition, it is possible to apply for a preparatory academic semester at the Academy.
