Research project
My research seeks to understand Muslim women from fisher communities in South India, particularly in Kerala’s Malabar region, through the lens of sensory anthropology, under the title “Sensing the Precarious Fishy Body: Embodiment and Everyday Life of Coastal Muslim Women” It pays close attention to their embodied lives, especially the ways the coast, the sea, and work shape their bodies, labor, and surroundings. Rather than seeing women only through economic and household roles, the study explores how they are lived, felt, and recognised through smell, touch, sound, movement, fatigue, and the sensory texture of everyday life. The fishing body, the fishy smell, the salty air, the harbor, the home, and the mosque all become part of a shared social world that shapes identity and hierarchy. Through this approach, I am trying to understand how coastal Muslim women experience the world through their bodies and senses, and how these sensory experiences reveal wider questions of gender, belonging, and social difference.
