CONFERENCE Who forms the city? Socio-political discussions in the context of the right-wing upswing 16.11.19, Hotel Silber, Stuttgart

The research project "Populism, Democracy, City" and the Stuttgart citizens' association "Die AnStifter" invite to exchange ideas. Together with representatives from political education, trade unions and civil society initiatives, we will discuss the consequences of the current shift to the right for urban policy debates and how to deal with right-wing positions in everyday life.

Right-wing protest movements and recent election results show that the current shift to the right can be observed both in rural areas and in cities. The research project "Populism, Democracy, City" (PODESTA) at the Universities of Tübingen and Jena is dedicated to the urban level. It follows the assumption that current successes of the right are to be understood against the background of a crisis of democracy. On the one hand, deficits in political participation - for example in large-scale construction projects or in housing and transport policy - are thus addressed in the city, which can be appropriated for right-wing populist elite criticism. On the other hand, the diversity of different lifestyles brings with it conflicts over urban coexistence, which can turn into xenophobic resentments with right-wing offers of interpretation. The research project investigates such conflict situations in Stuttgart and Leipzig.

Within the framework of the conference organized jointly with the citizens' project Die AnStifter, previous research results will be presented and commented on by civil society actors. The central concern is to enter into dialogue with the citizens of Stuttgart. After all, it is civil society initiatives in particular that advocate more participation, social justice and tolerance in the city. They are also called upon to develop answers to the current rise of the right.
Together with representatives from political education, trade unions and civil society initiatives, the following questions will be discussed: What consequences does the current shift to the right have for urban policy debates? How can right-wing positions be dealt with in everyday life? How can the demand for a good life in the city be met?
