Why does AI research and development need more women?

Artificial intelligence (AI) will of course be used in many areas of our society in the coming years - be it in medical diagnoses, in application procedures or in decisions about the creditworthiness of individuals. AI-based systems are based on algorithms invented by humans - and on data that they make available to them. In most cases, the human being is a man. The proportion of women studying computer science has been rising steadily for years. However, only one in five graduates is still female, according to current figures (2017) from the Federal Statistical Office. Regina Ammicht Quinn explains in an interview on International Women's Day why diversity in AI research and development is an important prerequisite for gender equality, and what is still necessary for it.
