Book launch “Frauen an der Universität Tübingen”

at Thursday, October 22, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., Pfleghofsaal (Schulberg 2) as part of the 550th anniversary during the 2026/27 winter semester. The language of the event is German.

For centuries, the University of Tübingen was dominated by men, even though a woman—Mechthild von der Pfalz—played a central role in its founding in 1477, and without her, the founding would probably not have been possible. It seems that until the late 19th century women faded into the background at the university. Upon closer examination, however, even before the first officially admitted guest student and extraordinary student, Maria von Linden, women can be found in various roles throughout the university’s history.
The book “Frauen an der Universität Tübingen” traces the paths of these women and sheds light on gender relations both in the period before women were admitted to the university and in the subsequent developments leading up to the first female researchers and professors. It also addresses the university’s gender equality policies in recent decades as well as broader issues of gender constructions.

The book launch will start with opening remarks from Rector Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. (Dōshisha) Karla Pollmann and continue with a panel discussion, and a poster exhibition on “100 Years of Women’s Higher Education.” Light refreshments will also be served.

The event is a cooperation between Institut für Geschichtliche Landeskunde, Zentrum für Gender- und Diversitätsforschung, Museum der Universität Tübingen, MUT and Team Equity.

The book is being published as Volume 11 in the series “landeskundig. Tübinger Vorträge zur Landesgeschichte.” For more information please contact Tjark.wegnerspam prevention@uni-tuebingen.de | 07071 29 77582
