Title: Dating hominid sites: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Abstract: Geochronology is a tool box to find out how old things are. Sometimes the results are as expected (all is good), sometimes the results lead to new insights into human evolution, and sometimes the results are simply confusing. There are a number of studies that seemingly try to make human fossils older, others to make them younger. The difference is that the "oldest" and the "youngest" have good chances to get into Nature and Science, while the rest is lucky to make the Journal of Human Evolution. I will discuss the sites of Liang Bua, Omo, Callao, Ngandong and Mungo in more detail to provide an appreciation of how complicated it can be to arrive at reasonable age estimations.
