Life-outlines within Love-discourse. Combinatorial Strategies of Personification and Allegory in Minnereden for the Conveyance of Courtly Values

Which dogs are being sent out in a hunt to catch the game, which represents the courtly lady? Who is the judge, who the attorney in the court of love and which personifications are judging over the unfaithful lover? Which statement unfolds when virtues flee from vices out of a house? And how is the royal court of Lady Love constructed? The dissertation-project aims to present the aesthetic value of Minnereden through personification, whilst combinatorics, as an innovational approach, functions as the device of analysis. Within Minnereden there are long sequences of personification to display the topic of love and the courtly values that come with it. From a modern perspective, these sequences may just seem repetitive or as if they follow the same pattern. However, the combinations are carefully/strategically composed to represent courtly values and design virtue-catalogues, which adapt to different rules and vary depending on the structure of the Minnerede. Furthermore, the dissertation seeks to display/unfold the fascination Minnereden elicited in their medieval audience and make it comprehensible and accessible through detailed analysis.
