Aims of the CRC

The CRC’s research programme pursues the following aims:

  • The first aim is to demonstrate the potential and resources that pre-modern aesthetic acts and artefacts hold for the present academic discourse on aesthetics. A means to this end is a heuristic change of perspective, which is characterized by the search for a different aesthetics. It is initiated by the praxeological model of aesthetics and the approach via figures of aesthetic reflection.

  • The second aim is directed at testing the innovative praxeological model of aesthetics as a research concept across different disciplines, differentiating it further and establishing it as an analytical tool in research on pre-modern times. Moreover, in a transcultural and transhistorical dialogue, we seek to explore the heuristic validity of the praxeological model when applied to phenomena of non-European and (post)modern aesthetics.

  • Our third aim consists in determining the coordinates of a different aesthetics with regard to the European pre-modern age. In a second step, we then intend to demonstrate the applicability and the explanatory power that the observed points of intersection can also claim in a transcultural perspective and for our present times.
