New Momentum for Civic Engagement & Service Learning: Launch of the BUS and BOOKS Projects

In April 2026, we launched two innovative projects, "BUS" and "BOOKS", in the TRACS area Civic Engagement & Service Learning. Funded by the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre, they strengthen practice-oriented teaching, civic engagement and sustainable cooperation with civil society partners.

With the BUS (Brücke zwischen Universität und Schüler:innen) and BOOKS (Building Opportunities for Our Kids and Seniors) projects, our department is further expanding its commitment to Civic Engagement & Service Learning. Both initiatives combine academic learning with social responsibility and create new opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

The projects aim to develop innovative teaching and learning formats that closely connect theory and practice. In cooperation with external partners from civil society and the community, practice-oriented projects will be implemented in which students address concrete needs, develop solutions, and actively contribute to societal development.

While BUS focuses on building sustainable structures and partnerships with community stakeholders to strengthen mentoring programs for students, BOOKS promotes participatory approaches such as field trips, storytelling, and intergenerational encounters, which are combined with service-learning.

Together, the two projects provide important impulses for responsible and participatory higher education teaching.

We look forward to fruitful collaborations, motivated students, and a lasting impact within the university and society.
