Between the Hammer of Witches and the Historia of D. Johann Fausten. Religious Knowledge and Aesthetic Reflection in German Literature of the Early Modern Period
Over the course of the persecution of witches between the 15th and the 17th century, numerous demonological treatises were published, e.g. Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of Witches) in 1487. On the one hand, these publications systematized religious knowledge of diverse origins in short anecdotal forms similar to ‘Schwank’ tales. On the other hand, the treatises present literary texts (e.g. Ovid's Metamorphoses) as quasi-historical sources of demonic activity.
Based on the concept of 'religious knowledge' and the praxeological model of the CRC, this project’s aim is twofold: firstly, it seeks to find out how non-fictional and predominantly pragmatic texts take up narrative procedures and genres. Secondly, it wants to explore how predominantly fictional texts, e.g. the Historia of D. Johann Fausten (1587), transform demonological knowledge into a narrative. The ambiguity of illusion is a central concept for this project, as it investigates to what extent the demonological concept of illusio daemoniaca develops into a figure of aesthetic reflection in the early modern period.
