Doctoral programs generally fulfill the following criteria:
- They are part of a shared research context such as a Research Training Group, Collaborative Research Center or an interfaculty program.
- They ensure appropriate structures for research coordination, promoting scientific exchange and qualification.
- They offer a structured admissions procedure consisting of an application and selection process which considers the candidate’s suitability.
Other names for doctoral programs include:

DFG Research Training Groups
Research Training Groups are institutions of the German Research Foundation (DFG) at universities for the promotion of young researchers in a structured research program. The RTG's are funded for a maximum of nine years. The RTG's focus on the qualification of doctoral candidates who are to achieve scientific independence at an early stage. Some of the research training groups are international in nature and offer the possibility of joint doctoral training with one or more partner groups abroad.
Faculty of Medicine
The structure of the Graduate Academy of the Faculty of Medicine is based on the main research areas. Graduate programs exist for various research foci. Other offers such as statistical consulting by the Institute of Biometry and the offers of the Competence Center for Medical Didactics are interdisciplinary. The PhD program Experimental Medicine and the IZKF PhD program are also interdisciplinary structured PhD programs.
Faculty of Humanities
The PhD Networks were established by the University of Tübingen to promote the exchange of doctoral students among each other beyond a single research group.
Research Training Groups are institutions of the German Research Foundation (DFG) at universities for the promotion of young scientists in a thematic research program.
Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences
The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences maintains several structured graduate programs, some of which provide fellowships.
LEAD Graduate School & Research Network (Learning, Educational Achievement, and Life Course Development) – that stands for more than 130 researchers from ten departments and more than ten nations.
Faculty of Science
In addition to the individual doctorate, which is not tied to a training program, there are various forms of structured doctoral programs at the Faculty of Science. These aim to make the doctoral phase transparent, offer good supervision and complete the doctoral thesis within a manageable timeframe.
Faculty of Protestant Theology
In Research Training Groups, it is particularly valuable to exchange ideas with doctoral candidates and professors from other disciplines.
Faculty of Catholic Theology
The Humanities Section of the Graduate Academy aims to improve the framework conditions for all doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Catholic Theology, the Faculty of Protestant Theology and the Faculty of Philosophy for the success of their doctoral projects and to support young academics in their life and career planning. The offers complement those of the Central Graduate Academy in a subject-specific manner. All doctoral students - regardless of whether they are pursuing an individual doctorate or are a member of a research training group - automatically belong to the Graduate Academy.

Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience
The Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience (GTC) offers an international and interdisciplinary structural doctoral program with three different research foci:
- Computational Neuroscience
- Neural and Behavioural Sciences
- Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience
The program provides an extraordinary framework for graduate students to achieve their PhD under excellent supervision. The GTC offices offer consultation and support during the doctoral phase for the success of the student’s doctoral graduation.
