BOOKS uses high impact pedagogical approaches that integrate academic learning with civic engagement including service-learning (SL), domestic study-away, and storytelling. their community engagement experiences.
Service-Learning: BOOKS combined academic learning with civic engagement. Students, lecturers and community partners work on equal footing to contribute to the course and address issues pertaining to social and educational justice impacting children and seniors in Germany.
Storytelling: BOOKS leverages storytelling as an educational tool to bridge generational (as well as disciplinary) divides and provide a common language and framework for students to understand complex socioeconomical challenges that make certain populations vulnerable.
Domestic Study-Away: BOOKS breaks the ‘academic bubble’ by sending students to regions with underserved demographics. During the study-away, students will engage in creative activities like writing stories and making books with children and seniors.
