The Programm:

The Athene Mentoring Program is designed for women in the study, doctoral and post-doctoral phases as well as for female professors.

Athene Mentoring supports women in pursuing a scientific qualification, both if they see their future in science and if they see their professional future outside science.

The focus is on addressing the specific situation of women in the science system and at the university and counteracting discrimination.

Athene Mentoring overview:

  • Cascade Mentoring
  • Target group: from BA student to MA, PhD student, post-doc, junior professor to professor
  • One-to-one mentoring
  • Mentoring in the group
  • Basic module for mentor training
  • Workshops for networking and training of mentors and mentees
  • Coordination of the central structure of the program by the Equal Opportunity Office
  • Faculties set their own priorities
  • Student assistants support the organization in the faculties

The goal of Athene Mentoring is to reduce the loss of women in the process of scientific qualification and to interest female students and scientists in the next qualification levels at an early stage.

Athene Mentoring is scheduled to start in the winter semester of 2021/22. Initially, the Faculty of Catholic Theology, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences will participate. Registration will be possible during the summer semester 2021.

The program is a so-called cascade mentoring, in which women from one qualification level are mentored by the one above. The mentoring is intended to increase the proportion of women in master's degrees, doctorates and ultimately professorships. Exit strategies from academia are also supported as needed. The mentoring relationships are flanked by workshops for networking within the various career levels and for further training both in terms of general key qualifications and specifically on the situation of women in studies and science.

Why do we need a mentoring program for women?

Women are faced with very specific problems during their studies, during their academic qualification and even when they are still professors. Often, their difficulties are attributed to individual deficits - even by themselves - although they are actually rooted in their situation as women. Thus, women are in a fundamentally different situation than men in their studies and in science. They always have to prove their individual performance against the background of a whole series of discriminating factors. A mentoring program for women helps them to recognize these discriminatory factors and to learn methods of dealing with them successfully in the university environment.
