Research Interest

In my research I am focusing on learners' monitoring of their learning processes and their regulation of this monitoring. Monitoring means to assess the degree to which one's learning goals have been achieved. Monitoring is measured by learners' judgments of their future memory performance (judgments of learning; JOLs). It is important that JOLs are accurate, because they are essential for controlling and regulating one's learning effectively towards a learning goal. Unfortunately, learners' judgments are often inaccurate. However, research shows that monitoring accuracy can be improved by performing an active task after learning, such as generating summaries or completing diagrams. So far, only verbal tasks have been investigated. But studies on learning from external representations suggest that the generation of a pictorial external representation aids learning. Therefore, I will investigate whether drawing as an active generation task can help to improve one's monitoring as well.

LEAD's interdisciplinary structure gives me the opportunity to build up my scientific network, to collaborate with researchers who have similar interests and to benefit from the other members' expertise. Furthermore, through supervision, introductory seminars and lectures, the PhD training program offers me a way to continuously extend my knowledge.
