Internationally renowned artist Otobong Nkanga as the University of Tübingen's sixth “Invited Artist”

From November 5 to 25, 2024, Otobong Nkanga was an “Invited Artist” at the University of Tübingen. She spent three weeks with us and led, among other things, an interdisciplinary workshop for students.

Otobong Nkanga workshops entitled “A Line, A Trace, A Score” took place as part of the Transdisciplinary Course Program at the University's “Zeicheninstitut” and invited students to re-experience themselves and their (surrounding) world and to develop their creative intelligence. The relationship of people to their environment as well as questions of identity and belonging were at the center of the students' artistic work.

Otobong Nkanga is the sixth “Invited Artist” since the start of the program in 2018. She has already exhibited at the documenta in Kassel and the Venice Biennale. Immediately before her visit to Tübingen, she opened an installation at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. With her work, the artist wants to change our view of the world and our place in it.

The concept of the “Invited Artist” at the University of Tübingen introduces students to art and its traditions and draws attention to special features and developments in different cultures. The aim is to promote creativity, artistic understanding and cultural diversity. The international artists' workshops complement the regular art program at the university, which is organized by numerous committed artists from the region. In this way, they give students from all faculties access to contemporary art.

Otobong Nkanga has greatly enriched and inspired us in the TRACS team, but above all the students in her workshop, with her clever, open and engaging manner. It was a great pleasure and honor to have her as our guest.
