We are excited to share the latest interdisciplinary study led by Simona Affinito and team members of the Junior Research Group under the supervision of Dr. Fotios Alexandros Karakostis, recently published in Scientific Reports. This study marks the first in neuro-archaeology to use EEG technology to explore brain activation patterns during key modes of early hominin stone tool use.
The findings suggest intriguing connections between hominin brain evolution and the use of precise humanlike tool use. This work builds on other recent studies from the group on the biomechanical (muscle) requirements of efficient early stone tool use as well as fossil evidence for humanlike manual activities in certain early hominin species.
More details and pictures can be found in the press release, including a link to the publication.
