Language certificates for Asia (except Korea)

The language certificates to be submitted for the Asia exchange program depend on the planned study project.

If you wish to enroll exclusively in an intensive language course in Japanese (in Japan) or Chinese (in mainland China or Taiwan), you do not need to submit proof of language proficiency.

If you wish to enroll in English-language courses, the following rules apply:

• TOEFL iBT and IELTS are accepted, but the more affordable DAAD language certificate is also sufficient. TOEFL iBT (Note: TOEFL iBT Home Edition is not accepted!)
• IELTS Academic
• DAAD Language Certificate (available from the English Department at the University of Tübingen  or the German-American Institute Tübingen (d.a.i.)).

However, some Asian universities, particularly in the fields of economics and law, require the TOEFL or IELTS. If you submit only the DAAD language certificate to the International Office as part of your application, you must submit a TOEFL or IELTS test after receiving your admission offer from the International Office.

Please make sure to obtain your language certificate well in advance of the application deadline! Test dates are often booked up weeks in advance.
