This page provides information about Wi-Fi access and ID cards at the University of Tuebingen.
The University of Tuebingen and the University Hospital Tuebingen are members of the international eduroam (education roaming) consortium. The network provides secure network access for researchers, teachers, and students both at their home institution and when visiting other institutions that are also members of the network.
Eduroam Wi-Fi is available in most buildings of the University of Tuebingen campus as well as all in the University Hospital Tuebingen, the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience CIN and the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Medicine. The University of Tuebingen computer center ZDV provides a list of all university eduroam access points.
Further information about eduroam as well as an interactive map of member institutions can be found at https://www.eduroam.org.
If your home university is a member of the “eduroam” consortium, you may be able to use your home login to access the free Wi-Fi network at the University of Tuebingen and the University Hospital campuses. Please enter your user name as follows: <login>@<home university.country> (e.g. 123xyz@brown.edu). Please note that your login may not be your actual name, but the user ID used to login to your e-mail account.
To find out if your university or research institute is a member, please contact your home institution’s computer center and follow their instructions to connect with your laptop, phone or tablet. Since you may need to accept a security certificate from your home institution, make sure to connect with eduroam at least once before leaving your home country with every device which you plan to use in Germany.
If your home university is not a member of eduroam, you can also access eduroam after receiving a login ID from the University of Tuebingen or the University Hospital Tuebingen. If you have a work contract with the university, university hospital or CIN or are enrolled as a student, you will receive your login ID automatically. For visiting scientists at the University of Tuebingen who do not have a work contract and will not be enrolled as a student, the Welcome Center offers to apply for a login ID for guests of the University of Tuebingen (except the University Hospital). Feel free to contact us about this anytime. Please note that this service cannot be provided for guests of the Faculty of Medicine, University Hospital and CIN.
The University of Tuebingen computer center (ZDV) provides information about installation and configuration of eduroam on several operating systems on their homepage.
For information concerning eduroam configuration with a login of the University Hospital Tuebingen network, please consult the homepage of the University Hospital IT department (in German, Intranet only).
For official guests and for congress visitors, the university hospital can provide temporary internet access via Wi-Fi for a maximum of one month. This guest network uses the existing Wi-Fi infrastructure and like eduroam is available in most buildings of the university hospital. The application for requesting access to the guest Wi-Fi must be submitted by a University Hospital Tuebingen employee using an online application. Further information is available on the employee pages of the UKT IT Department under Guest WiFi (UKT Intranet only).
Just as there are two different eduroam infrastructures at the University of Tuebingen and Faculty of Medicine (Faculty of Medicine, University Hospital and CIN), there are also two different chip ID cards and two different systems for the cafeterias. Depending on where your host institute is, you will find the information relevant to you below.
Employees and enrolled students of the University of Tuebingen are automatically given a university ID card and a university e-mail account. The University of Tuebingen's Welcome Center can apply for university IDs and a university e-mail account for visiting researchers without employment contracts, and for PhD studetns who are not enrolled in the university.
The University of Tuebingen ID card can be used to pay for meals in all university cafeterias, to borrow books from the University Library, and to use the printers in the libraries of the university and its institutes. The credit of these cards can be recharged at various places on the university campus (for example at the cafeterias in Wilhelmstraße and on the Morgenstelle, or in the University Library). In most cases, only debit cards or credit cards can be used to recharge the credit of your university ID card. However, there is one machine in the University Library's main entrance area behind the lockers that also accepts cash.
If you are neither an employee nor an enrolled PhD student, the University of Tuebingen's Welcome Center can apply for an e-mail account in your name, allowing you to log onto the eduroam Wi-Fi network at the University of Tuebingen and the university hospital campuses.
For employees of the Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Tuebingen, the official employee ID card “MACK” (short for Mitarbeiterchipkarte) allows cashless payment at the university hospital cafeterias on the Schnarrenberg (“hill”) hospital campus and next to the Women’s Hospital on the hospital campus in the valley. These cards can only be issued if you have a personnel number. If you have an employment contract funded by a grant and do not have a personnel number, please speak with the human resources representative responsible for your department.
Information, opening hours and application forms are available in German only on the "MACK" page of the University Hospital (intranet only).
Research fellows without UKT work contracts and doctoral students at the Faculty of Medicine who are not enrolled as students of the University of Tuebingen can pay for meals in the UKT employee cafeteria with cash or with a cafeteria guest card, that means you need to pay a small fee to borrow and use the chipcard and will be able to get the deposit back, when you return the chipcard and the end of you stay.
Research fellows at the Faculty of Medicine, University Hospital and CIN without a UKT work contract, as well as doctoral students at the Faculty of Medicine who are not enrolled as students of the University of Tuebingen can apply for a university chip card which can be used for the university cafeterias (for example Wilhelmstraße and Morgenstelle), to borrow books from the University Library, and to use the multi-functional printer at the University Library and on the university campus. Application forms can be found on the website of the University Computer Center ZDV.
Applications for an e-mail account for Faculty of Medicine guests and employees must be submitted by the head of the host department or by the IT security officer and must be paid for by the host department's budget. Since the University Hospital of Tuebingen network must protect patient data, access is highly restricted, and accounts can only be given only to employees with a UKT employment contract who have completed an internet safety course. For most researchers without clinical duties, an e-mail account in the university "research" network is more suitable.
