Wie Sterne mit einer vielfachen Masse unserer Sonne entstehen, bildet eine der fundamentalen Fragen der modernen Astrophysik. Denn diese massereichen Sterne bestimmen den Energiehaushalt ihrer Galaxien wesentlich. Nun haben Professor Wilhelm Kley, Dr. Rolf Kuiper und Dr. Dominique Meyer vom Institut für Astronomie und Astrophysik der Universität Tübingen gemeinsam mit Dr. Eduard Vorobyov vom Institut für Astrophysik der Universität Wien durch theoretische Berechnungen neue Komponenten entdeckt, welche die Sternentwicklung mitbestimmen. Auch fanden sie bei der Entstehung massereicher Sterne Parallelen zur Geburt der sehr frühen Sterne des Universums sowie von massearmen Sternen. Ihre Forschungsergebnisse wurden kürzlich in der Fachzeitschrift Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society veröffentlicht.
Die Geburtsgeschichte von massereichen Sternen sei immer noch ein Mysterium, weil diese während ihrer Entstehung in eine extrem dichte Gashülle eingebettet sind, sagt Rolf Kuiper, der eine von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderte Emmy Noether-Nachwuchsgruppe zu diesem Thema leitet. „Die Gashülle macht es nahezu unmöglich, den Geburtsvorgang selbst mit Großteleskopen einzufangen. Mit anderen Worten, wir sehen die Krippe, in der sich die massereichen Sterne bilden, aber nicht die jungen Sterne selbst.“ Das Forscherteam hat die Sternengeburt in einem theoretischen Modell numerisch berechnet. Für diese anspruchsvolle, rechenintensive Studie nutzte es die Höchstleistungsrechner der bwHPC Landesinitiative Baden-Württembergs.
