University of Tübingen engages in new ARUA Collaborative PhD Programmes

The University of Tübingen is participating in three of the sixteen newly approved international Collaborative PhD programmes by the Executive Committee of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). 

The Collaborative PhD programmes involving the University of Tübingen cover the following topics:

• Infections & Multimorbidity (Tübingen Coordinator: Prof. Dr. med. Steffen Borrmann, 100 students expected)
• Computational Thinking & AI (Tübingen Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Philipp Berens, 100 students expected)
• Functional Genomics of Disease (tentatively approved, Tübingen Coordinator: Prof. Dr. med. Olaf Rieß, 50 students expected)

These programmes are set to launch in January 2026. 

The goal of this initiative by ARUA is to help deal with the shortage of research capacity on the African continent. Each programme is open to doctoral candidates from all ARUA universities who meet the eligibility criteria to be determined by the partners, as well as candidates from other African universities. ARUA aims at 70% female enrollment.

These Collaborative PhD programmes are linked to the ARUA-The Guild Clusters of Research Excellence (CoRE), in which the above-mentioned Tübingen researchers are engaged. Tübingen’s involvement aligns with the University’s international strategy to enhance research cooperation and student exchange with African universities.
