C2’s research question is which strategies interlocutors use to avoid increasing common ground defectiveness in ironic utterances in non-standard communication media such as social media, involving massive multilogues. C2 will test if the CG update mechanisms (conventional and conversational) described for linguistically co-present communication (with verbal, prosodic, gestural cues) can extend to text-only communication in social media (with e.g., textual cues, emojis). Using multimodal and cross-linguistic data (from English and Turkish) from annotated corpora, experiments, and surveys, findings will refine standard CG models to fit diverse and restricted communication scenarios.
