Multiple Common Grounds – Linguistic Mechanisms for Literary Meaning

The interdisciplinary linguistic-literary project investigates how common grounds and updates interact in multiple common grounds with an embedding structure. Embedding CGs is a hallmark of literary texts, which are therefore an excellent empirical domain to model multiplicity in the CG concept. In particular, we ask which semantic and pragmatic tools shape the update, in which way the CGs are different, and what the effects of the embedding structure are, especially with regard to steering the meaning of a literary text for the reader.
