Negotiations
Besides the classification of the position within the pay scale, most components of the compensation and budget package offered for the position depend on the negotiations with the department, faculty and/or the President's Office during the appointment procedure.
Compensation
Compensation is comprised of a base salary according to the classification of the position within the pay scale and additional variable salary components. The variable components consist of a family allowance, function-based allowances, and performance bonuses and incentives.

Staff
German universities are still primarily organized according to the “chair principle” (Lehrstuhlprinzip), which means that professors – whether in the natural sciences or the humanities – are considered to be heads of their own individual departments, sections, or teams. They are responsible for all of the research and teaching within their section, for hiring the necessary personnel, as well as determining how many staff members they require to achieve their research and teaching objectives. The number of academic and non-academic staff allocated to a professor’s team is thus generally part of hiring negotiations.
Equipment & Budget
The scope of equipment and the budget available for books, office materials, and travel are also subject to individual negotiation. The same applies to the office space, location, and infrastructure.
Relocation Allowance
Financial relocation support to finance a move to Tübingen depends on individual negotiations, but is usually limited to around €6,000.

Dual Career Offer
Part of an offer for a professorship may include finding a second position at the university for a candidate’s partner. If such assistance is necessary, candidates should discuss it during employment negotiations.
