CIVIS – an alliance of partners throughout Europe

Since 2019, the University of Tübingen has been a member of the university alliance CIVIS - A European Civic University, together with ten partner universities from all over Europe, in and outside the EU. In addition to cooperation in teaching and research, the alliance’s major focus is on student exchange. With various formats, physical, online or blended, numerous students have been able to gain international experience within the framework of CIVIS in recent years. What is special about our ten partners, from Madrid to Stockholm to Athens? We have asked all CIVIS universities to send us short English texts for this newsletter to introduce their institution; the editorial team has translated them. Therefore, the following contents are available in both German and English.

The University of Lausanne (UNIL) in Switzerland was founded in 1537. Focusing on the human and social sciences, life sciences (including medicine) and environmental sciences, it now has over 17,000 students of almost 130 nationalities.

During their studies, students benefit directly from the results of the UNIL scientific community’s research activities. With 15 Bachelor’s and 42 Master's and doctoral programmes delivered in 26 disciplines, students are able to study the subject of their choice in depth while benefiting from high-quality infrastructure in a particularly pleasant working environment. In fact, UNIL’s main campus stands in a vast green space planted with ancient trees just a stone’s throw from Lake Geneva, with a magnificent view over the Alps.

UNIL has seven faculties and conducts leading-edge research, particularly in oncology, forensic science, digital humanities and sports science. The sophisticated infrastructure made available to its researchers contributes to its attractiveness. UNIL has a total of 2,400 academic staff and an additional 1,150 of technical and administrative staff. The Lake Geneva region is also home to several research institutions, including the university hospital, within a relatively small area. This favourable environment attracts numerous multinationals, start-ups, small and medium-sized firms and international sporting organisations.

The dynamism of its research activities is reflected in its international rankings, where UNIL is placed between the top 100 and 200 universities in the world. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded in 2017 to Jacques Dubochet and two co-recipients for a major advance in the field of cryomicroscopy is emblematic of the quality of the research conducted at UNIL.

UNIL has long been aware of the importance of sustainability issues and is committed to supporting and inspiring the major social changes we need by giving its community the means to think about and shape the world of the future. It can rely on the collective excellence of its research and teaching, and the civic commitment of its members, to achieve this aim.

Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) is a public comprehensive university. Its identity is rooted in a strong social commitment through specific actions and structures that have evolved since UAM creation in 1968. About 30,500 students are enrolled at UAM, the number of academic staff and faculty is 2,600 and there is another 1,125 of technical and administration staff.

UAM’s vision easily fits with CIVIS concept: a European University alliance devoted to widen its impact beyond the academy, transparent, accountable and well-managed, making use of innovative methodologies encompassing society demands. CIVIS is very important for UAM, as UAM believes in generating a European University together with sibling partners sharing such fundamental values and aims.

All of the university’s activities are based on values cultivated along decades: the pride to be public, to be research-oriented, to have clear social commitment; to be sustainable, healthy, and concerned with the continuous improvement of education quality. UAM is devoted to the dissemination of research results not only to student education but also to the society as a whole: The university truly believes that knowledge transfer is the best tool to boost social and economic development.

UAM is internationally oriented and focused on collaborative partnership with institutions aimed not merely at assuring students and staff exchange and mobility, but mainly at building common specific projects, for education and research improvement as well as Sustainable Development Goal cooperation. UAM’s allies span from culturally and geographically closer Latin America or North Africa countries to distant East Asia or sub-Saharan Africa.

An early and increasingly vigorous vocation of UAM has been to establish a strong partnership with the Spanish Scientific Research Council (CSIC). In 2010, both institutions were awarded the label of Campus of International Excellence UAM+CSIC. Located in the north of Madrid, the main campus is a green space of research and innovation, with five UAM-CSIC research Institutes, five CSIC Institutes, two Madrid Institutes for Advanced Studies – in Food Science and in Nanoscience - as well as the Madrid Science Park, aimed at nurturing scientific and technological entrepreneurship and technology transfer. UAM hosts altogether more than thirty research centers, and six Health Research Institutes (Hospitals) in Madrid.

UAM is a key partner in EIT FOOD, a European consortium focused in transforming our food ecosystem. Finally, UAM has shaped the Madrid Institute for Advanced Study (MIAS) in Humanities and Social Sciences, aimed at reinforcing UAM research on societal challenges including Mediterranea- and Africa-related topics.
