Dr. Daniela Doneva is the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Gustav-Hertz-Preis, awarded by the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG, German Physical Society). Her research as an Emmy Noether group leader in Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Tübingen has led to her receiving this honorable award.
Dr. Doneva received the prize for her exceptional investigations into the properties of black holes and neutron stars in theories of gravity beyond general relativity. Her work has also significant contributed to the use of compact objects and gravitational waves as tools to study fundamental physics.
Through her research in theoretical and computational astrophysics, Daniela Doneva has revealed new phenomena that occur in theories of gravity beyond general relativity. Her work has provided deeper understanding of "strong gravity" and enabled systematic examinations of potential degeneracies in gravitational wave measurements, which has implications for various areas of fundamental physics.
Dr. Doneva obtained her doctorate in theoretical physics from the University of Sofia (and partially at the University of Tübingen) in 2012. She has been working at the University of Tübingen since then and has received support from a Humboldt Research Fellowship (2013-2015) and the Margarete von Wrangell Habilitation Program (2015-2018). She has been leading her own independent Emmy Noether junior research group since 2019.
The Gustav-Hertz-Preis is given to recognize outstanding completed work by young physicists and to encourage their continued contributions to the field. This work must be from the fields of either experimental or theoretical physics, to demonstrate significant progress, and yield novel discoveries.
