New collaboration: The Kastanienhof real-world laboratory

A place where research, sustainability, and inclusion come together

At Kastanienhof in Bodelshausen, the University of Tübingen has been operating a real-world laboratory for research into sustainable pyrolysis and biochar processes since 2025 in cooperation with Arbeit in Selbsthilfe inklusiv gGmbH (AiS).

Pyrolysis is a process in which biomass is heated to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. Among other things, this produces biochar. This not only binds CO₂, but is also an ideal storage medium for nutrients and water – and is therefore suitable as a raw material for plant fertilizers.

The aim of the cooperation is to pursue application-oriented research questions and open up new avenues for sustainable energy and the circular economy.
