research project

Co-Creativity in Early Modern Religious Literature

The aim of this project is to locate and conceptualize reflections on co-creativity in English religious literature of the Early Modern period. My research is embedded in project C5, which strives to reconstruct a poetics of co-authorship since research has only studied practices of collaboration in Early Modern theatre so far. The recurrent manifestations of as well as allusions to co-creativity in poems and sermons by Early Modern religious writers, e.g. George Herbert or John Donne, have not yet been explored fully. In the course of this project, I seek to understand how specific aesthetic figures of reflection are indicative of a broader concept of co-creativity in the early modern period.  A close reading of my corpus will provide an in-depth analysis of such notions of co-creativity, contributing to a 'different' aesthetics of authorship in Early Modern English literature.

research focuses

  • religion and literature
  • early modern poetry
  • co-creativity (and communication)
