Learning a new language in Tübingen, Germany.

Leaving South Africa for the first time was very overwhelming, I was filled with excitement but also had some fears. Other than exploring Germany and participating in all of the classes one of the things I was ambivalent about, was interacting with the locals and learning a new language.

When I had first arrived in Tübingen, I had some fears that the language barrier between myself and my host family or the people I interact with would cause some conflict. Little did I know that it would be a way for us to grow stronger bonds and even make friends along the journey of exploring Europe, more specifically Germany. Learning German whilst being in Tübingen was beautiful and very interesting because it went beyond the four walls of the classroom.

The classroom lessons were extremely informative. Our German teacher (Christina) prepared her lessons to be interactive and created a fun safe space for us to ask questions, make mistakes and explore the language!

Even during the late classes that ended at 18h15 she still managed to keep the lessons alive :). The lessons included memory games, matching pictures with words, competitions (where I got to see the very competitive streek of my fellow African participants) and a range of activities that were very beneficial.

A highlight for me was learning very useful phrases that we could use in our everyday communication, around Germany. A few of these phrases were asking someone what the time is, what time the next bus would be and how to order food.

The more interesting part about learning these phrases and putting the theory that we learnt in class into practice when communicating, was when Germans responded to us and we could actually understand what they way saying.  It would become even more interesting when attempting to have a conversation with someone and somewhere along the lines you don't have the words to respond to them to keep the conversation flowing.

During breakfast and on a few occasions during dinner I also managed to learn a few phrases from my host family and together with my roommate I'd try and memorize it and share it with my classmates the next day! This was an amazing way for us to bond, as we discussed the similarities and differences between the English, Afrikaans and German language.

Learning German inspired me to become more multilingual and learn languages other than the 11 official languages that we have in South Africa. The lessons also proved that I am capable of putting myself out there and served as a reminder that learning a new language is challenging, fun and always interesting!!

I cannot wait to show off the German that I've learnt when I get back to South Africa.

Lastly, I'd like to commend the Tübingenen-South Africa programme team. It is a wonderful programme and I will forever be grateful for this opportunity. Thank you.
