Welcome to the German language program of the University's German as a Foreign Language Unit for:

  • Degree students in international English language Masters Programmes (not exchange students or interns)
  • Ph.D. students
  • Postdocs and visiting researchers / academics

currently registered / employed at the University of Tübingen.

We'd like to help you get acquainted with German and feel comfortable in German language conversations at the university and in everyday life.

On a beginners' level (A1.1 - A2+), we offer a special series of classes:

Early Bird and Evening Classes Beginners' German

Learn German in the summer semester 2024

Course Description

These courses for beginners cover all aspects of German needed for basic communication routines and familiarize with the distinctive structures of the language.

You can choose between

  • our Early Bird courses (two times per week, 8.15-9.45h)
  • or the Evening Classes (two times per week, 18.15-19.45h)

during the complete semester. (Summer term: April through July, Winter term: October through February)

Classes are available for absolute beginners (A1.1), beginners with some previous knowledge (A1.2) and more advanced beginners ( A2.1, A2.2, A2+).

We have both classes that take place digitally on Zoom and face-to-face-only classes:  Preview for the  program in the winter semester.

Please note: successful course participation requires regular attendance (2x week) and additional preparation time. You should calculate about 6 hours for all together (course + homework). Please make sure that you really have enough available time! 

Course Registration

 Registration starting: Monday, March 25th through Thursday, April 4nd, 2024.

4 Steps to Registration:

Step 1 Take the placement test at your current level (A1 or A2) in max 60 minuntes and save the results sent back to you by email:

This test is obligatory for the Early Bird and Evening classes – unless you are a complete beginner. Don't be tempted to let others help you - to get a place in our courses that fits you, your test results should correspond to your actual level. Have the test results ready to include in the application form.

Step 2 Fill in the online application form. The link will be active from March 25th - Aril 4nd.

Step 3 After we have reviewed applications, you will receive a message via email to let you know if we can offer you a place at your level, including detailed information for making your payment (80 € course fee for Master Students, 140,00 € for all others). Make your payment right to secure your place.

Step 4 After we have received your payment we will confirm your registration. Your teachers will contact you with details for your first meeting in class, shortly before classes begin on/after Tuesday, April 23.

Intensive Course for M.A. Students in March

Course Description

M.A. students - this is for you! Would you like to improve your German but have a very packed schedule? This new intensive course during the semster break could be a perfect solution. In three intense weeks, you will complete a sub-level.

Course dates: March 4 - March 22, 2024

Participants: This course is designed for students in an international Master's program.

Intensity: 5 days / week, MO-FRI from 9:00 - 12:30. Additionally, a mandatory tutorial twice a week from 14:00 - 15:30, and homework for the days without tutorial

Classes/levels: A1.1., A1.2, A2.1., A2.2. You will complete a sub-level in this course, which is equivalent to a semester course.

Course fee: 80,- €

Credits: 6 ECTS

Registration period: Registration will start in December. The registration form will be available on this page. Allocation of places will be on a first come, first served basis

Location: face-to-face classes, the classrooms are located at Wilhelmstraße 50

The test is not necessary if you are a complete beginner. If you are currently participating in a class in the winter term and finish the class sucessfully with a grade 2 or higher, you do not need to take the test again, either. Otherwise, we ask you to do the test or meet us for a consultation. (More information will be given in the classes).

 Please note: We cannot refund the fee in the case of withdrawal and deregistration after the start of the course.

If you have already learned some German beyond these beginners' levels, you can choose in the broad range of more advanced German classes in our Unit: Course catalogue winter term 23/24. Registration for these courses is separate from the Early Bird and Evening Classes; detailed instructions on our general registration page (required placement test, optional advising. At the placement test meeting on Zoom, we will explain the registration process.
