Don’t feed the Predators: Smart Academic Publishing for Researchers Publishing is an essential part of academic life — but today’s publishing landscape is increasingly complex: Open Access requirements, publication fees, embargos, publisher negotiations, metrics, funding policies, and highly professional-looking fake journals.
This session provides postdocs with a concise and practical introduction to academic publishing today. Participants will learn about: the lifecycle of a scholarly publication and the publication workflow, practical guidance for publishing in Open Access journals, institutional publishing support and funding opportunities, how to navigate publisher agreements and publication fees (article process charges) publishing for visibility, credibility, and scholarly impact and how to identify predatory publishing offers. In addition, we will provide information on the option of publishing teaching materials, known as Open Educational Resources (OER). The Central Open Educational Resources Repository (ZOERR) for Baden-Württemberg, its impact and the services it offers within the academic landscape – and in particular to the University of Tübingen – will be presented to interested participants. Using practical examples, we will show how researchers can make informed publishing decisions, which services are available at the University of Tübingen, and what to watch out for during the publication process. The session also explores how these topics relate to the broader context of Open Science and why sustainable, community-driven publishing models and university-based infrastructures are becoming increasingly important for the future of scholarly communication.
The session of 50 min+10 min Q&A is open to post doc researchers from all disciplines.

The 3R Center is an interdisciplinary research center of the University of Tübingen and the NMI Reutlingen, which is dedicated to the development and application of human-relevant in-vitro models like Microphysiological systems (MPS). MPS are innovative, miniaturized in vitro models that replicate key structural and functional aspects of human organs. By recreating organ-specific microenvironments, these systems enable more realistic investigations of complex biological processes and human physiology. MPS allow researchers to study physiological and pathophysiological conditions and to assess the effects of stimuli such as pathogens, therapeutics, chemicals, and environmental toxins in human-relevant models. They serve as valuable alternatives and complements to conventional animal models, offering new opportunities for biomedical research. This lecture will introduce organ-on-chip systems, and highlight their applications and potential for advancing more human-relevant research.
