"The twelfth century is usually characterised as a period of economic growth, associated with an increased exploitation of resources. However, a review of the archaeological material suggests an alternative framework which delays economic intensification until late in that century, when it is argued that increased resource use could be related to a greater definition of identity within major social groups".
