Exhibition: "Print Material. Incunabula and Broadsheets at Tübingen University"

The exhibition was officially opened in mid-June and can be admired at Hohentübingen Castle until 8 September 2024. Richly illustrated books and broadsheet woodcuts from the holdings of Tübingen’s University Library will be on show, which are otherwise inaccessible to the public. The project was conceived as part of working group B4 of the CRC 1391 Different Aesthetics by Andrea Worm and Sandra Linden in collaboration with Kristina Stöbener (University Library) and students at the University.

So-called incunabula (cradle-books), which were printed before 1500, and thus at the beginning of the printing press, are at the heart of the exhibition. Printers recognised the potential of images and woodcuts early on. The prints represent the knowledge and areas of interest of the period in medially interesting ways, thus making them accessible to a wider public. The holdings on show in the exhibition make a wealth of imaginary worlds and horizons of experience tangible. The range on display encompasses large-format Bibles and books for religious edification and instruction, works on astronomy and botany, historical and legal texts, as well as prayers, letters of indulgence, and pamphlets.
