Colourful Mainz. An Investigation into the Polychromy of Roman Stone Monuments in the North of Germania Superior

Colourless marble statues and temples have formed a picture of antiquity since the early days of archaeology. Although archaeological findings have repeatedly documented the painting on ancient monuments since the 18th century, '‘white antiquity’ has persisted. The exclusively visual expertise at the time did not allow the identification of the smaller pigment residues. The distribution options for colour evidence were also limited. In addition, ancient polychromy was sometimes ignored or even negated during a classicist understanding of aesthetics. This can be seen especially in Roman provinces. As such, the research aim is to record the range of provincial Roman polychromy and identify colour patterns. Primarily stone monuments from Mainz from the 1st–3rd century A.D. will be covered. For the investigation, pigment residues are localised and then examined using non-invasive methods.
